In 1990, Harlow co-founded the Sprouse, Mozola, Smith, Rowley P.C., which would eventually become Sprouse Shrader Smith P.C. Throughout his 53 year career, Harlow became one of the most respected attorneys not only in the Amarillo area, but in the state. His practice areas included litigation, oil and gas, commercial litigation, product liability, antitrust, business, insurance, and corporate matters. He was elected a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, presented the Presidents’ Award of Merit, and Chaired the Texas Bar Foundation. For 21 years, he served as a Board Member for the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct Committee. He also served as President of the Amarillo Area Bar Association in addition to the Maxus Board of Directors in Houston. Harlow was a co-author of the Texas Lawyer’s Creed which was approved by the Supreme Court; this document is the basis of the Texas legal industry which guides civility and professionalism across all aspects of legal practice.
Above all, Harlow will best be remembered as a family man. He was a loving husband, father and friend. Harlow is survived by his wife, Jerre, of almost 55 years, three daughters, and five grandsons. Sprouse Shrader Smith P.C. will never be the same after this loss, but we will forever be better at law and at life thanks to our friend and mentor, Harlow Sprouse.
